The 5 Day Black and White Challenge
The 5 day black and white challenge was a challenge issued by a fellow photographer Jasmine Linn. The concept was simple, to share a different black and white photo every day for five days. A majority of my work is done in color so this served as an excellent exercise to get out of my comfort zone.
Day One:
I wanted to begin the challenge with a classic landscape photo, and this also provided an opportunity test out some new equipment. I recently started shooting with a Vizelex Rhinocam mounted to a Sinar P2 4x5 Monorail Camera, using a Sony Digital Back. The resulting image is roughly 200 Megapixles and was a joy to work with.
Day Two:
During the second day of the challenge I ventured to Chicago. After wandering the city throughout the day I had the chance to take a night photograph of one of my favorite Chicago landmarks; the Marina Towers.
Day Three:
For the third day of the challenge I chose to use another photo from my trip to Chicago. The L Platform provided an excellent vantage point to get above the street, and get a shot with a tunnel-like vanishing point. Unfortunately there were electrical wires directly in front of my shot, which required several hours of retouching to remove.
Day Four:
For the fourth day of the challenge I chose to use an image from my archive. Several years back I visited Hyde's Mill in Ridgeway Wisconsin. The mill was set back several miles on a country road but was an amazing find, and well worth the drive.
Day Five:
For the final day of the challenge, I chose to journey to Glacial County Park in Ringwood, IL. This park is one of the few truly hilly places Northern IL. This day, though cold was an excellent way to end the challenge.
